Why CBD skin care?
LUMMIS believes in the restorative and healing power of CBD. There’s a lot of information out there, but here’s a quick rundown on why we’ve developed a business around this special molecule.
Cannabinoid (CBD) receptors are located throughout the skin, making CBD a potential powerful healing therapy for a range of conditions. When we apply CBD topically, the compound syncs up with these cannabinoid receptors in our skin and actively helps control the optimum balance of our healthy skin cell functions.
As Tamás Bíró, PhD, director of the Immunology Department at the University of Debrecen, Hungary, told Elle Magazine, “…most, if not all, skin functions are controlled to a certain extent by the local skin endocannabinoid system. This includes the skin barrier, which is very important for moisture retention, sebum production, and sweat-gland function, as well as skin-centric sensory functions such as pain and itch. But perhaps most important, it appears that the endocannabinoid system controls skin inflammation—so if an inflammatory or irritation challenge assaults the skin, the endocannabinoid system fights against it.”
These anti-inflammatory properties make it a potential soothing and repairing treatment for acne, eczema, psoriasis and other skin conditions, and could also reduce the puffiness, redness, and swelling that accompany a variety of skin imbalances.
Acne involves the overproduction of sebum, an oily substance intended to protect the skin. CBD is shown to inhibit the sebum production in skin cells, making it an effective preventative for acne. Allow us to get specific: One Clinical study has shown that the molecule CBD reduces lipogenesis of sebocytes or the formation of tallow in the sebaceous glands. The cannabinoids that were applied to the cells of the skin glands activated receptor cell membranes (called TRPV4) and successfully disrupted the pro-lipogenic path. This, in turn, prompted the reduction of protein in the core receptor (NRIP1), which affects the metabolism of glucose and lipids. With the help of CBD the receptor successfully inhibited lipogenesis of sebocytes, or the formation of tallow, in sebaceous glands.
Many believe the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD can also control the other effects of acne because the skin around the zit is intensely inflamed. Another study suggests CBD can also act as an antibacterial agent, decreasing the likelihood of further acne in the future.
CBD is well tolerated by all skin types, but as with all skin care products be sure to review the ingredients and choose the ones that best suit your skin type. Above all, LUMMIS believes in living a balanced life, eating healthy and spending lots of time with the people you love.
